Juliet To Replace Bookstore

Cappy's email this morning announced plans to transition the current Juliet Cafe into the new college bookstore during the 2009/2010 academic year.

We're glad to see that place used for something better, but do we really want to walk all that distance just for some Airborne?

What do YOU THINK?

UPDATE: CLICK HERE for Vassar's official press release regarding the new plans.

ummm... way to go vassar... trying to establish bonds with local businesses and kicking them out to make room for your bookstore?

also, what was wrong with the old bookstore?

if anything needs improvement, kick out barnes and noble.

so what are they going to do with the current bookstore? extend the mug? yeah right, although that would be awesome, im pretty sure they wouldnt do anything that cool with it.

how about turning the bookstore space into a student union-type thing? with couches and pool tables and a big tv or something. right now the mprs and random broken stuff in the dorm basements are ok, but it'd be nice to have more of a central place to go, that isn't the domain of a particular dorm. yes, there's upc, but it's taken over by orgs a lot which makes it hard to hang out in.

also, the bookstore used to be a student-run co-op before it turned into a barnes and noble. oh, vassar.

i love juliets! where will i buy my cigs? smokes for less? that's too fucking far to walk.
i agree with 1:00 pm. this is NOT the way to mend things with the community.

THIS IS BRILLIANT. It's going to do wonders for that crappy business district. Thanks goodness! A nice big Barnes and noble will make this area SO much nicer.

They should put in a grocery store, not a bookstore. Or a movie theater. Or something we don't already have

I also immediately wondered if they would extend the mug. That would be incredible.

And they aren't kicking out local businesses, they already own the property and probably just won't renew the lease to Juliet. Regardless, I bet a bookstore does more for the community than such an eatery.

This sucks that they're kicking out Juliet's. Juliet's is actually a pretty fun place to chill on Friday nights, but unfortunately a lot of vassar kids don't really know about it. Our loss.

I feel torn about this. On the one hand I don't understand why the college needs a larger bookstore and has to kick out Juliet's to have one. There is plenty of empty space on collegeview and more than one eyesore. Is it really not possible to build something a little further down the street? It would be closer to the campus at least (not that it's that far to walk, c'mon people.) Not to mention that Juliet's is pretty popular with non-Vassar students (not that Vassar students don't go as well.) I don't think this is going to foster any sort of community with Poughkeepsie.

On the other hand, I think its a good idea to get a few more students off campus, even if its just across the street. Some people really don't leave and maybe people would venture further if they were "forced" to.

But I'm with everyone else on the whole Barnes & Noble thing. Can we please get rid of them?

I have a feeling Vassar is going to lose a fair amount of business from impulse buyers and prospective students buying Vassar gear...

Get rid of Barnes and Noble??! Are you kidding me!? This is like those stupid hippies who want to kick coke and get rid of Starbucks. Poughkeepsie NEEDS name brands like nothing else. We need a nice big retail store that offers products and services that a little dinky local place cannot.

I can't WAIT for this new store to open! It's going to be the focal point of the neighborhood, and really make this whole area look SOOOOO much cleaner.

The idea of a movie theater (or grocery store / something we don't have already) is a very intriguing idea. I'd love to be able to walk to a movie, also, going to movies with crowds is always fun and a movie theater right next to campus would be sure to see a ton of business.

nothing was wrong with the old bookstore. barnes and noble is terrible. juliet's cafe was the best. terrible move, vassar college. i bet the old bookstore will become a stupid social gathering place, like the mug or your average worthless mpr.

juliet's used to be a movie theater complex. restore it if anything.

I'm so excited for this!! I bet the old space could turn into something really useful. People have been complaining about a lack of space in the college center FOREVER. Another meeting/lecture/gathering area could do wonders to free up the mpr and villard room, which are always so tightly scheduled. Sweet!

PLUS we get an even better bookstore across the street. Can't wait.
