Tomorrow's Headline

MADS EXCLUVSIVE!

Vassar's Equestrian Team will be on the cover of tomorrow's Misc.

In addition, there will be an article on the three dining companies bidding for a contract. There will also be an article providing an update on the gender-neutral housing issue. Finally, the editorial board of the Misc will discuss ownership of the paper in a time when many corporations are buying out college newspapers.

yeah, which companies are bidding?? better not be aramark.

We have an equestrian team? I heard Aramark WAS chosen as one of the three. I mean, I don't think it would even be that bad. people bitch about the food, but it's pretty good usually.

Anonymous said...

11:10, i agree. we should keep aramark but maybe just give them shorter contracts. most of the food is not bad at all, especially the pizza, eggs and stir fry.

weren't people bitching about aramark and the stupid workers or whatever last week? the food's good compared to other campuses i've been to, so screw the workers. long as i get that really good kind of sandwich bread.

Anonymous said...

YYYeeaah we have an equestrian team!! and it rox.

Anonymous said...

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? the food now sucks.

Anonymous said...

i'd rather have aramark till i graduate than have to switch to all-you-can-eat style

Anonymous said...

why does the cover of the newspaper feature the stupid horse-riding team?

Anonymous said...

12:43, it's PROBABLY because they have a show coming up (and i believe it's their first at-home show in a very long time). And what's wrong with raising awareness and generating support for a little-known, but completely dedicated, campus group? All of those articles sound interesting.

12:43, Why the hell not?!... You're an idiot

equestrian?! what a fuckin' joke.

horse riding is a sport, and a very important one that requires a lot of talent. don't call it stupid, please.

or ill have my horse trample you

equestrian team rocks. we are hosting a show on saturdayyyyy.

Anonymous said...

hey, the equestrian team is ill, and I'm not even on it. Riding horses is hard, give them some credit! Some people are really ignorant.

Anonymous said...

about time we got some repppp.

how come equestrian team makes the cover when basketball and volleyball (teams with far more members in the student body, and sports which are far less elitist) which both had hugely important wins saturday are relegated to the second to last page? emma's article on these two teams (and swimming) was extremely well written, but it's placement in the paper was ironic. good thing i read the misc backwards...

Because there are many people on this campus who hate others simply because they're athletes. Too many people were picked on by athletes in high school, and they resent the Vassar "jocks" for it.

Anonymous said...

11:55, the reason basketball or volleyball weren't put on the cover is that their wins were on Saturday. The Misc tries to plan their cover stories a week in advance. Plus, their horse cover makes for a much prettier cover photo than the inside of the gymnasium.

Anonymous said...

oh 2:12, I forgot, our paper is so amateur they couldn't possibly include news from Saturday for a Thursday print. my bad!

Anonymous said...

We could also keep in mind that by the time the paper was printed, the volleyball/basketball story was almost a week old. Everyone knew about that story already. The equestrian show is coming up this weekend, which makes it more relevant, and could also generate support for the event. i thought their cover choice was fine. And they did mention all of those weekend sports wins in the photo spread in the Sports section.

Anonymous said...

Yes they mentioned them in an article criticizing the lack of attention that sports get at Vassar. Ironic, isn't it?

The Editor in Chief of the Misc is a former Vassar athlete. The Senior Editor (second in command) is a current Vassar athlete. I'm not on the Misc, but I'm pretty sure that they're trying their best to write about a variety of interesting campus news. If the volleyball win had come at a relevant time during their printing schedule, I'm sure it would have made the cover.

Anonymous said...

Doubtful...the Misc never acknowledged Colin Sanders as an All-American last year. In my 3 years here I can't ever remember a sports story being #1 in the Misc.

Anonymous said...

once the women's rugby team made the cover because they made nationals, which is an absolutely huge deal. they made it again this year but they didn't get a lot of coverage.

Anonymous said...

um. because basketball and volleyball are always in the misc. and this is the eq teams first show in THREE YEARS.

Anonymous said...

and by first show, i mean first show that we are hosting. haha.

Anonymous said...

11:16/11:17, basketball and volleyball deserved a cover instead of the equestrian team because:
1. they both just had huge wins in their games...you have a "show" occurring. see the difference?
2. basketball and volleyball athletes and fans account for a much larger portion of the student body. probably because those sports are both more exciting for the spectator and don't require one to be upper-class in order to participate.

Anonymous said...

3. to the person who said horses make a prettier picture than the gymnasium... i say we should have had tully's glorious mug adorning the cover.

Anonymous said...

@ 11:58
do you know what a show is? haha. it's synonymous with a "competition". there's going to be teams from all over the east coast coming to compete.

Anonymous said...

equestrian team is NASCAR for wealthy people.

Anonymous said...

riding isn't about being rich. yes, you need some money. but you need money for everything. it's about prioritizing what you spend your money on. horse people are happy to spend the money that they do have on horses.

your argument is obnoxious.
the end.

3:34, i agree that person phrased it obnoxiously, but i think what others have brought up regarding the class level of equestrian sports is that is seems a strange decision to give the equestrian team the cover for hosting a landmark event (by all means, they should be covered by the misc) in a week where teams followed by a larger and more socioeconomically diverse portion of the student body have both had landmark wins.
nonetheless, we can all agree horses are pretty.

Anonymous said...

not everything has to be about class, people. we should show off the fact that we have excellent riders here. it looks GOOD for us to be showing off a sport associated with wealth and privilege. it shows that our students will go off to become wealthy and privileged themselves. we should be proud of the fact that many other schools can't afford to fund a horseback riding team, and must stick to basketball and football.

Anonymous said...

OH MY GOD. By the time the Misc printed, the volleyball story was a WEEK OLD. The equestrian story is coming up THIS WEEKEND. It's simply more relevant. The Misc has covered both volleyball and basketball several times this year, and it's time that the little-known equestrian got a little coverage too.

Yeah screw those sports primarily played by poor minorities. Vassar needs more sports that only rich white people can play? Why add a track team when we are sorely lacking in the regatta department?

And people wonder why Poughkeepsie residents think we're elitist.

Anonymous said...

how bout cricket with giant pearls as balls? that'll show em how classy VC does it.

Anonymous said...

yes, we ARE elitist, because we are elite. We're some of the smartest people in the nation, who will go on to be some of the wealthiest. That's a good thing

Anonymous said...

12:17, you make me ashamed to be a Vassar student.

Anonymous said...

12:17 is right. elite is good. we should be proud of our horses and displays of wealth because it shows how much we and our families have accomplished.

Anonymous said...

yeah, and if people are poor, it's their own damn fault! clone of ronald reagan in 08!!!

Anonymous said...

You know, if any of you idiots who criticized the Vassar Equestrian Team did an ounce of research on the matter, you would know that the purpose of the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) is to make riding, which I will admit can be a somewhat elitist sport, more accessible to EVERYONE, from all different types of backgrounds. There is no pre-requisite riding ability required to join the team. They take anyone, with any experience; all you need is an interest. And when college teams attend horse shows, they do not bring expensive horses to ride in competition. They pick their mount out of a hat, giving every rider the same chance to show off their talent and ability – not their wealth.
Furthermore, the equestrian team has every right to be on the cover, because the fact they are hosting a show for the first time in 3 years is a huge accomplishment. You whine that the equestrian team is not well known and therefore not important, but isn’t the point of a college newspaper to make the campus community aware of those things that perhaps do not get much exposure?

and one more thing...
I am MORE ashamed to be Vassar student because of the people who are so quick to pass hateful conclusions about groups that they know nothing about. Grow up and stop making stereotypical assumptions. How about you go to a horse show or talk to people on the team, before you cast a judgmental postings on the internet?
