Setting The Record Straight

Nice work, anonymous commenter.

Mads has received confirmation that Bill O'Reilly will NOT be this year's Commencement Speaker. The speaker is not even "conservative," as we were previously tipped.

College Relations will be announcing the speaker within the next month.

An anonymous, but reliable source gives us insight into how the speaker is chosen:
A list of potential speakers was chosen by a committee of students, who make every effort not to publicize the person's name. The students and Class of 2008 President then met with the College President to narrow down the list, and Cappy herself made the invitation and official contract. They keep this quiet until all of the contractual stuff is settled 100%.

So there you have it. Keep checking Mads for updates on Commencement 2008.

UPDATE: The name of columnist Randy Cohen has been thrown into the ring.

UPDATE #2: We're very gullible...but...Cohen resides in New York and speaks for $10,000-$20,000. Hmm.

i was kinda pumped for bill o'reilly!

Anonymous said...

oh come on, someone just spit it out. who's the prick that i will have to endure while sobering up at 9am dressed in an overpriced ($70!!!) black sheet?

Anonymous said...

hopefully it won't be some liberal leftist like it usually is

Anonymous said...

aw too bad i was looking forward to being called a hippie fagot by the man himself...

Anonymous said...

I hope it's zombie Hunter S. Thompson.

Anonymous said...

Awww....I was really looking forward to the assassination.

i was really looking forward to seeing this school do something other than a liberal leftist!

ill be pissed if it is another liberal ... we should have another actor or something.

i must admit oreilly would have been cool..im liberal and although i disagree with his opinions on politics i think the guy would be great for commencement. especially, as 11:04 pointed out, well all be hungover and exhausted. so i think he would actually be somewhat entertaining and captivating. im tired of this school resting on liberal leftists, just because the majority of the population are liberals. if we promote 'diversity' maybe our school should take a chance and get someone whos not outwardly liberal.

dammit i was kinda psyched for bill .. for some weird reason

Anonymous said...

nooo! he would have been great

the college would never choose bill o'reilly. i can't believe people fell for that shit.

i wish we could have the speaker they had my sophomore year. he was amazing.

and yeah anon 11:04. why do they charge so much for some cheap polyester we'll never wear again? total bullshit.

Don't get yourself all bent out of shape about this, but I heard from a fairly reliable source that the speaker is Randy Cohen, who writes The Ethicist column for the Times Sunday Magazine.

Vassar promotes liberal values. It's a liberal school. We strongly believe in, even if we don't properly execute, principles such as need-based financial aid (not entirely dissimilar from welfare), have no merit-based scholarships, are committed to environmental issues and promote personal moral certitude over the comfort of a group. If you don't want to be at a liberal school, then why did you apply here? Honestly! Sorry to derail the discussion board.

Anonymous said...

indeed zack. whoever is not with us can get out of here, whoever is different in any way from the majority needs not to even bother applying. cuz this is where zack rulzzzzz. pathetic, but expected

Anonymous said...

the commenter never said they didnt want to go to a liberal school ... and just because of those thigns that doesnt mean conservative views shouldnt be acknowledged. part of being liberal is being accepting

Anonymous said...

Anyone who compares financial aid to welfare is clearly wealthy enough not to understand either.

Anonymous said...

If it's Randy Cohen, I'm going to shit my pants. I love the ethicist.

Maybe it's Hillary Clinton, she's really conservative . . .

anonymous owned zack

I heard it was Harry Potter. Publish THAT.

Anonymous said...

how is hillary conservative? obama's more conservative than she is...

Anonymous said...

Hillary was president of the Wellesley young republicans club, fyi.

I wasn't trying to say that the two things are the same, but I can see how people got that impression. Welfare and financial aid are liberal institutions that uphold the principle of granting monetary aid without expecting a direct return. Any attempt to align the two is foolish, and I should have worded my comment differently, but I think that both institutions stem, in a very general sense, from liberal financial policy. Sorry if I pissed you off - I wasn't trying to make any bold statements.

zack, good try, wrong again.

financial aid IS welfare. it takes money from the rich and gives it to the poor. it's essentially a form of social engineering, trying to boost the education level of those at the bottom of society.

you know said...

I would like to state that I want no association with 9:27's comment.

Anonymous said...

i mean, yeah, it is welfare in that sense. but that doesn't mean it's bad. affirmative action does the same thing. it gives a leg up to those who, for historical reasons, have been denied a leg up.

Anonymous said...

yeah, but making comments referring to people as being at the "bottom of society" really doesn't help matters

if bill o'reilly came, i know a lot of people would skip commencement. he'd be a waste of money.

randy cohen could be cool, if that's true.

i just hope whoever it is is worth waking up that early for.
