Where Does Your Dorm Rank?

The College Committee on Sustainability just released the following information on energy consumption by each dorm on campus over the course of a month. Jewett has the highest overall cost, but Strong has the most energy consumed per individual.

House: Total Cost: kWh per person per month:
Cushing / $1,770 / 86
Davison / $1,163 / 67
Jewett / $2,996 / 137
Joss / $2,668 / 118
Lathrop / $1,279 / 74
Noyes / $2,030 / 120
Raymond / $1,293 / 64
Srong / $2,733 / 168

Total: $15,933

Note: It appears that Main was omitted in the committee's report.

I guess Main's omitted cause it's more than just a dorm

Because strong girls never go out.

It's sad that Strong's number probably is higher for that reason...

3:21 is probably right. Vassar recently installed one electric meter per building to examine our energy use and find ways to improve it. All of Main building, including the administrative areas, is likely on a single meter, so Main data wouldn't be comparable to other dorms.

There are significant structural differences among the houses that could skew the data as well. Jewett may have higher energy usage due to frequent usage of its elevator and the need to pump water up to the tower. Regarding 3:40's obnoxious comment, there may be a structural reason that Strong House uses so much energy relative to the other dorms.

My question is how much of the electricity usage is controlled by students. That's something the numbers don't tell us.

more girls = more hair appliances plugged in

i fucking hate strong. i've never met anyone in there who isn't self-absorbed. everything here should just be coed

4:09 - Sounds like you haven't met too many people in Strong then.

I love how so many of you jump to stereotypes about women to explain the extra usage (more appliances). And how some simply dismiss a female space as outdated when it's important to the people living in Strong, if you don't want to live in Strong then don't.

Our energy use is probably structural (as 4:02 said) since the house was built in 1893. That's why I don't understand how the renovations for quad dorms started with the youngest building not the oldest.

6:05 -- Davison is first on the list of houses to be renovated because the roof is well overdue for replacement. While Strong is the oldest house, the other quad houses are in worse condition. The houses will be renovated in the order of need, not age. Thus Lathrop is next, followed by Raymond and then Strong.

Andrew

stereotypes about girls, at least as they relate to appliances, are by and large true

Anonymous said...

they have to straighten their hair and blow dry and hate on men. that all takes energy

Anonymous said...

Hahahahaha there are MEN at Vassar? Where!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

strong is a waste of space --- and energy too

hey strong is cool. its really nice inside and the people i know there are chill. so stop being mean about it.

but i must say, as a proud lathropian, im excited we used less energy!

also, lathrop totally needs more rennovations then strong. i mean really, just look at it. and this is coming from someone who loves living there.

i think every one of the quad dorms needs to be torn down and rebuilt. those buildings are embarrassments on the inside. jewett is the only decent-looking dorm on this campus. even joss is marginal.

i can't believe how negative, cynical, and judgmental the majority of students seem to be here. it's not mature or hip, it's just lame. these discussions are always full of people just putting other people down. i wouldn't be surprised if someone hated on this comment too.

9:16... just because some of the other dorms have PERSONALITY doesn't mean that they aren't just as "decent-looking" as Jewett. Honestly, the Jewett lobby/entrance area is so sterile.

jewett is amazing and way more beautiful than any of the other dorms. just because a dorm is old and gross doesn't mean it has "character."

Anonymous said...

the previous commentor is correct. i live in raymond. it has no character, it's just old. all dorms should look like jewett. change is part of a building's life. the point is the have these buildings look like hotels so that when students come for visits, they're impressed with vassar.

why would anyone want to live in a hotel?

I love old hardwood flooring and trim. I'm not a fan of hotels for four year stays. Vassar is for current students not potential students. I realize we need to recruit, but a mix of new and old is best not just hotel sterile.

i think joss has a great balance of new and old. the bathrooms are fabulous and the hardwood floors are gorgeous. the parlor's lovely. i don't think the mpr is very practical—it looked wonderful at the beginning of the year, but now it's just not as nice. i'd rather the dorms look like joss than like jewett.

Cushing's stairs got fixed. We have regained our "character".

Anonymous said...

hahaha Respire, i was thinking the exact same thing yesterday....

Main was omitted because their sensor wasn't working correctly.

Also, how can Strong have 168 people when all of the other dorms have numbers in the 60s? It is most likely 68 people.
If you actually do the division it comes out looking like this:
Cushing 20.58
Davison 17.36
Jewett 21.87
Joss 22.61
Lathrop 17.28
Noyes 16.92
Raymond 20.20
Strong 40.19

So way to go, Noyes!
