According to Brandeis' paper The Justice, the school's administration is working with Aramark to ban the sale of bottled water on campus.
"I object to selling water in containers that pollute our environment on our campus. Presently I am exploring ways to substitute other more earth-friendly ways to provide students access to clean, healthy water on our campus that does not involve non-biodegradable containers," says Brandeis President Jehuda Reinharz.
Would this work at Vassar?

sometimes you want a container you can throw out. like when you're going somewhere and don't want to carry a nalgene all day. I don't think people should drink bottled water on a day to day basis, but no one I know does. They just grab one when they're running somewhere and need it, and I think that's fine.

i think we should stop selling water bottles in acdc and the retreat, but keep them in vending machines. that way if you really need to take one to go, like if you're going off campus, you can.
i think each meal plan should include a nalgene/reusable bottle of some sort that can be filled for free at the dc or retreat. thoughts?
im all for the environment and all... but sometimes i think people take it a little too far.
it's a nice concept, but sometimes i'm on my way to dance rehearsal or whatever and forget my nalgene and don't have time to go back and get it. and since i don't carry cash i'd be screwed and thirsty. :-\
I guess no one knows that Take Back the Tap is trying to do this. According to Maureen King, ACDC won't sell bottled water next year. Everything will be flatware (nothing disposable, except take-out containers).
When we (Food & Water for Sustainability Committee) talked with Maureen and Ken, we discussed still selling bottled water at the retreat, but making it very expensive. A vice tax, kind of. They don't want to lose that big of a seller, but understand the environmental implications.
Also, 8:08, don't you remember when bottled water WASN't popular? I certainly do. going to my rec soccer games with a reusable (albeit ugly) bottle filled with glorious tap water and some tap water ice cubes.

I'm 20 and dont remember that AT ALL. My dad is 65 or so and drinks tap water all the time. It is supposedly pretty good here in NY. Still most new yorkers drink bottled water. I only drink tap from a water fountain if I'm desperate otherwise I'm buying bottled water.

What...? Tap water definitely has a taste, and it differs from Aquafina's. If I don't like the taste of tap water, I won't drink it. What's your point exactly? That water isn't some luxurious beverage? Sure, but why must I dislike something I drink so frequently?
tap water is AWESOME. the tap water in my house is on par with any bottled water. maybe its because i was raised on tap water, but i liked the tap water in my dorm, too.

Not that I don't LOVE tap water (I'm from NYC... it's uh-may-zing) but sometimes it's just more convenient to have a plastic bottle, especially when you're on that go.

i don't think concern for the environment is strictly a "liberal" thing, or a "hippie" thing. it's something that everyone should be obligated to because BOTTLED WATER IS NOT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY and it's kind of senseless if you're spending $1.50 a day on something that you can get for free. you're spending $1.50 a day on glorified tap water and destroying the environment while you're at it.

i have a nalgene and use it quite a lot and i drink tap water run through a filter at home, but i have an extreme dislike for the smell and taste of the tap water at school and i recycle every single plastic water bottle i get so i don't actually see a huge problem with it
11:39 - it's great that you recycle, but i think the most deleterious environmental effects aren't from the end-waste, but from the production and transport of bottled water.

if vassar and other institutions stop selling bottled water, then we're sending a message to the government that our water should be CLEAN and DRINKABLE (which it is). clean, drinkable water belongs to the public.
i think vassar should put a filter on one tap in each bathroom to fix the yucko taste.

it's a big deal because if you buy it, then they're going to keep making it. and it's the PRODUCTION that causes the most damage, not the end-waste.
If you choose to drink bottled water, thank you for recycling. But despite the "hippie environmentalist" reasons for not drinking bottled water, there is also the fact that over a billion people don't have access to clean drinking water. If the water out of your tap is good enough to drink, then drink it! Save the bottled water for places that need it.
I'm really surprised that you people are getting angry at the "rich kids" who feel bad about their wealth, when really you're just sitting there, reveling in your own entitlement. Isn't that much worse than recognizing that you're in a position to help people?

i hate doing dishes at school. i'll refill a plastic bottle a few times the day i buy it before throwing it away, but i loathe having to wash and dry my nalgene, which is apparently giving me cancer anyway.
