Middlebury's Similar Problem

While our debate over BoredatVassar continues, Middlebury is engaged in a similar controversy over a website called Middlebury Confessional (it can only be accessed through the Middlebury Network).

Tim Spears, the Dean of the College, writes, "If the number of posts is any indication, this site has been irresistible for many students. And some of the discussion [...] is—or could be—valuable. My concern here is that the site has also become a place for individuals to post derogatory comments about other people and groups of people."

That sounds familiar.

"Of course, we are all free to exercise our speech rights, but in an educational community such as ours, we are also obliged to exercise these rights responsibly," the Dean concludes.

It appears that Middlebury administration is not taking any direct action against the site, but is asking students to use better judgment. Would this work for Vassar?

No.

This kind of thing happens anywhere that there is a free open dialogue where people can maintain their anonymity with no repercussions (i.e. being banned or messages deleted).

berkeley's anoncon (done once or twice a year on the berkeley livejournal— see http://community.livejournal.com/ucberkeley/2429210.html for an example) seems to generally work well and is really interesting without devolving into a gossip server...if only we could do the same.

this is the first post I've ever read on mads that has shown that the writer actually looked for something relevant and interesting to post that wasn't already completely obvious or about some kid who no one cares about. I'm glad.

i guess it's relevant, except that i read an article about this in the misc two weeks ago.

but still interesting.

yo dont hate on mads - they tell me shit i dont know all the time. and a fuckload more people read this than the misc, so i dont really see such an issue being that this site talks about News more than like secret uncovering story bullshit.
