Wesleyan Incident Update

For those of you following this story...

Here's an update and more information about what happened at Wesleyan last night and today's aftermath.

Five Wesleyan students were arrested when a crowd of two hundred students refused to disperse from Fountain Avenue in Middletown. Police claim that students started throwing bottles at them. According to the Sgt. of police, "There were approximately 250 students in the streets [...] When officers arrived, they threw bottles at the officers as they were trying to disperse the students."

Students are claiming that police used brutality and excessive force. New photographs show that police were holding paintball guns. Many students were tasered, sprayed with pepper spray, and shot at with pepper balls. Another student was hospitalized for a bite from a police dog.

"We told them to move along and they refused," the Sgt. said. At that point, that's when the pepper spray and pepper balls were used."

The WSA president and administration have been addressing concerns throughout the day. The story has also gotten coverage on lots of local Connecticut news stations.

police are some of the worst people on the planet

i've never understood why the morons and bullies in grade school who subsequently decide to become police officers are given weapons to bully people in a much more dangerous way

Police officers are morons and bullies? Fuck the police? What are you learning at Vassar, how to be scum? You sound like hoodlums, not intellectuals. Put down the weed and turn off the ganster rap; they're killing your brain cells.

gangster*

Police are not "the worst people on the planet." They were just doing their jobs, trying to control a bunch of ignorant college students who were disturbing the peace and breaking laws.

5:09, you sound like a PTO Mom.

gangster rap kills brain cells? that is some of the most ignorant shit i've ever heard. NWA/ Ice Cube, Biggie and Tupac are some of the most important voices in American history. and yeah, we shouldn't stereotype all police as bullies... but there is still a lot of fucked up stuff going on in our country's law enforcement, from corruption to racism (remember Sean Bell?) to violence; hence the reaction known as "gangster rap."

so I say what I mean, and I mean what I say. Fuck the 5-O

Because intellectuals shouldn't be critical of the way that the police in America are a lot of fuck ups? Sean Bell motherfucker. And to sick a fucking dog on a kid at Wesleyan? are you kidding me?

This year at Vassar I've seen the police physically abuse a student of color on the street just off campus because she 'fit the profile' of a criminal.

I think it's absurd there are still people on this campus who strive for intellectual white new england bullshit. Guess what - none of that shit matters. At all. People all over the world and in our neighborhoods are dying and being abused - I think we ought to recognize that shit - that's what the world is. Not a bunch of intellectual bullshit.

And the saddest thing is that's probably the kid who like, quotes MLK and says shit like "Diversity is SO important at vassar"

We should cancel all our abroad programs with Wesleyan. Its shameful that we associate with such a mess of a school.

ok guys, so what do you propose we do? fire all the police officers and just live without law enforcement? the reason the "morons and bullies" are overrepresented in the police force is that they're mostly the only ones willing to take the jobs, be in the line of fire, and actually protect us. and the reason for that is that the job doesn't have enough prestige or any other kind of attraction, so "intellectuals" end up going into other jobs and then it's just the morons and bullies that are left as police. which causes the reputation of the job to fall, which causes the proportion of morons and bullies to increase, in a vicious cycle. We as a nation need to RESPECT the police force if we want the whole situation to change.

2:02, I hope you grow up someday. When I first came to Vassar I was a little like you (okay, probably not as big of a douchebag). But I'm ashamed that I once believed in abolishing the 2nd amendment because I actually trusted police that much. I'm just thankful I've had amazing professors, like Laymon and Mamiya, that have allowed me to open my eyes.

a bunch of white rich kids talking about fuck the 5-0? Yea im sure... The bad-ass Vassar kids who live in the "real world" that is Vassar right? Break a law and get written up and now you all tough asses, but when the shit hits the fan I wanna see which one of you fuckers is gonna keep order....

You're giving the middle finger to the only people that keep your suburban, petrified and fake society together without them you'd shit yourselves silly, while in the meantime you complain because the upkeep the laws that you cherish in every b/s class you go to.

Im not even gonna waste my breath anymore... Oh and Mads wtf? Apart from re-writing the shit I get in my e-mails and giving me plain statements when are you gonna do the "commentary"? You've got the little "commentary" of life in Vassar but you've completely forgotten what it is to have an opinion unless you're squeeling over Britney and the Spice Girls, its pathetic. The most interesting news you've had all along is a report you lifted directly from the Wesleyan blog COME ON MAN!
So many kids read this shit, make it entertaining or at least constructive to a debate, instead of just blasting out a report and then letting retarded comments float at will, direct it and guide it, people will comment and you my friend can become a true voice or source of information and debate on this campus. Use the influence that you have for something rather than giving me some bullshit hot mess picture of some drunk f-head.

Ill keep this anonymous just for the sake of staying in line with all the rest of it...

ok. it SUCKS that innocent bystanders (i.e. people who came out of their houses to see what was going on) got caught up in this, but i do think that this speaks volumes about privilege and entitlement. i read reports that they'd been given 40 minutes to disperse... and they were on city (public) streets! it's like if vassar kids were partying on lagrange and the cops came!
granted, poughkeepsie is not a college town in the sense that the bulk of our students don't live off-campus. and i guess it sucks that they don't have spaces like the THs.

anyway, i condemn what the police did, and yes, it DOES reflect more broadly on police brutality, BUT this makes me mad about how entitled college students feel about the spaces they occupy and speaks to a lack of respect--not necessarily to authority, but to public space. sorry... people arguing about the "right to assembly" ?? a college party is NOT a protest.

i guess we'll have to wait and see to find out what really happened (... is this possible?)

9:43, the street they were on was a public street but it is entirely composed of houses that are occupied by wesleyan students only. and the bulk of wesleyan students don't live off campus either. all the houses on the street on which the incident occurred are owned by the university.

Why is it that on the internet, people sound like the biggest douchebags when they argue.

Another shocking example of police brutality as you have shown in your blog. many students. These police officers were trying to control a bunch of ignorant college students who were on the on the street for protection but police has choose n th use Pepper Shot Pepper Spray on students and many students have hurt badly really an another painful incident by police officers. The government must have to take some action on such type of police officials. Thanks for giving such an interesting blog.
