ACDC...Change We Can Believe In

ACDC opened its doors to a select few today for a preview of the newly updated dining center. Mads was lucky enough to get an invitation and a tour of the new DC.

The cashiers are now located at the entrance to the food area. One swipe of the V-Card gets you as much food as you want.

Changes have been made to the layout of the food area, as well as the stations and menu items. The salad bar is now located on the East side, where the old stir fry station was. The salad bar is no longer self-serve, which allows the food to be more fresh as it is prepared in front of you. Next to the salad bar is the new deli and a self-serve panini station.

An expanded bakeshop is located where the old deli was. The Home Cookin' station has also been expanded. Matt's Grille returns, despite a fire in the middle of the summer that claimed one of the grills. The wrap and Flat Top stations return with new menu items. A "wrap of the day" feature will be offered.

The bagel station has been relocated to the "Chef's Table" area.

New stations have been created for soup and condiments. Finally, a large Mediterranean station has been added.

An updated stir fry station is now located on the West side. Guests have the option of having stir fry prepared in front of them or making it themselves. The cereal station has also been relocated to the West dining hall.

The beverages are now located in the dining rooms. There is new fiesta ware, including mugs. The plates are slightly smaller, which keeps portions in order.

One of the biggest changes in the new DC is the end of using trays. This reduces water and energy, as well as controls food waste. Trays are available for individuals who need assistance carrying their food.

The new system isn't perfect, and it's clear that it will take some getting used to. The new take-out system, for example, seems complicated. Guests are no longer allowed to take food to go, except for specifically designated "take-out meals." Guests will receive a take-out container from the cashier upon entry. In addition, guests also can no longer swipe for another person. Meal plans now contain ten guest meals that can be used by others.

When asked about the changes, most of the staff members we spoke with seemed hesitant but excited. "We're going to have a lot more fun and flexibility," said a manager of ACDC, Rennee.

"This is just the beginning," said Anna, also a manager.

"If it doesn't work, we'll find something that does," said Renee. Whether or not the changes prove effective, updating ACDC shows that Campus Dining is working to make us, the students, happier.

"I'm excited about the change," said Randy the cashier. "It's for the students and that's what we're here for."

Update: Sorry, we forgot to mention that the pizza station also returns. It is now located where the old Mexican station was.

"can you go into the dining area without buying food?"

Obviously not because you'd be able to mooch food off of somebody that paid.

Same goes for taking out food. You'd be able to smuggle food to people who haven't paid.

Don't you understand how "all you can eat" dining halls work?

is it really that hard to have a decent system Vassar, really? Every one of my friends' schools I've been to visit have a better and more logical meal system than we do.

i doubt that'll change any time soon

The 2 bests things about ACDC were stealing and wasting hours hanging out while various friends and well-wishers walked in and out, especially on hungover weekends. Now those things are pretty much gone forever.

My sentiments exactly 8:42. My boyfriend lives off-campus and so doesn't have a meal plan. It's ridiculous that I can't swipe my card twice for the both of us if I want to. Shouldn't it be my choice if I want to spend my money? I hope whoever is in charge of this knows that they are going to get yelled at (well, maybe not so aggressively, but there will be unpleasant arguing).

Um.

What about the pizza station?

Lack of mention seems ominous.

Things look nice in those pictures. Hopefully they'll be that nice in a few weeks.

this is not going to work out well.

#1. i liked making my own salads, and i dont want someone else making them for me. i dont want any gourmet salad, i want my own simple salad, made when im in a rush by myself.

#2. TO GO CONTAINERS. i lived off of taking out food from the dc. my retreat points didnt last me very long, and my schedule is hectic, as most students' are, so having to go meals available is crucial.

not happy.

DON'T SCARE ME LIKE THAT, MADS

not being able to come in without paying. that SUCKS. plus, i hate that if i come in for a big to go thing of water, or to get like, a banana, it costs me the same as coming in for a huge meal. not sensible.

No more trays! That means no tray puns and . . . no traying in the winter time!! Two of my favorite things.

is anything changing at the Retreat?

WHERE THE FUCK IS THE COKE DISPENSER?!?!?!?!

the salad bar is still make-it-yourself. its just that the items on the salad bar get prepared right behind it instead of in the back kitchen. don't worry - you still get to make your own salad.

and the retreat has expanded slightly - they've put up a permanent wall next to where the fro-yo machine was which makes it feel a lot bigger.
