ACDC opened its doors to a select few today for a preview of the newly updated dining center. Mads was lucky enough to get an invitation and a tour of the new DC.
The cashiers are now located at the entrance to the food area. One swipe of the V-Card gets you as much food as you want.
Changes have been made to the layout of the food area, as well as the stations and menu items. The salad bar is now located on the East side, where the old stir fry station was. The salad bar is no longer self-serve, which allows the food to be more fresh as it is prepared in front of you. Next to the salad bar is the new deli and a self-serve panini station.
An expanded bakeshop is located where the old deli was. The Home Cookin' station has also been expanded. Matt's Grille returns, despite a fire in the middle of the summer that claimed one of the grills. The wrap and Flat Top stations return with new menu items. A "wrap of the day" feature will be offered.
The bagel station has been relocated to the "Chef's Table" area.
New stations have been created for soup and condiments. Finally, a large Mediterranean station has been added.
An updated stir fry station is now located on the West side. Guests have the option of having stir fry prepared in front of them or making it themselves. The cereal station has also been relocated to the West dining hall.
The beverages are now located in the dining rooms. There is new fiesta ware, including mugs. The plates are slightly smaller, which keeps portions in order.
One of the biggest changes in the new DC is the end of using trays. This reduces water and energy, as well as controls food waste. Trays are available for individuals who need assistance carrying their food.
The new system isn't perfect, and it's clear that it will take some getting used to. The new take-out system, for example, seems complicated. Guests are no longer allowed to take food to go, except for specifically designated "take-out meals." Guests will receive a take-out container from the cashier upon entry. In addition, guests also can no longer swipe for another person. Meal plans now contain ten guest meals that can be used by others.
When asked about the changes, most of the staff members we spoke with seemed hesitant but excited. "We're going to have a lot more fun and flexibility," said a manager of ACDC, Rennee.
"This is just the beginning," said Anna, also a manager.
"If it doesn't work, we'll find something that does," said Renee. Whether or not the changes prove effective, updating ACDC shows that Campus Dining is working to make us, the students, happier.
"I'm excited about the change," said Randy the cashier. "It's for the students and that's what we're here for."
Update: Sorry, we forgot to mention that the pizza station also returns. It is now located where the old Mexican station was.
