According to tomorrow's Misc, Vassar has been negatively affected by the fall of some of Wall Street's major investment firms in the past few weeks.
The Vice President for Finance and Administration, Elizabeth Eismeier tells the Misc: “With roughly 30 percent of our operating budget support provided by investment return on the endowment, it is inevitable that the losses in the capital markets will impact Vassar’s near term financial plans."
Yikes! Could this mean yet another increase in tuition?
Read more about it here.

whoa that could maybe be scary...
we need these dorm renovations badly.
whats wrong with your dorm? you have a bed, don't you?
uh i live in lathrop and it's a shit-show. other schools have nice dorms, why can't we?
oh right, because the economy is going to hell in a hand-basket.

just saying, when push comes to shove, i'd rather spend our money on things like financial aid and getting the best professors than luxuries like marble bathrooms and refinished floors.
I'll transfer if the tuition is further increased.
word 9:15
915 and 943- word. im already on a shitload of financial aid and i already cant afford this place. if tuition goes up i literally will be forced to leave. cappy and friends i hope you read this blog and see that despite your best efforts you have still created an elitist institution that is by no means accessible by anyone qualified.
I def. agree with the previous comments. I don't think this school is really worth an increase in tuition
fuck
wait wait wait, the article doesn't say ANYTHING about increased tuition. all it says is that we might not be able to build shit so quickly.
it seems like cappy's number 1 priority is aid...
tuition will definitely increase - every college in the country increases every year. our tuition won't go up as significantly as it has the past few years, but it will still increase - Aid will also increase proportionally. It's the sad truth of a bad economy and higher education trends, but honestly - we do an incredible job of granting aid for a school in our financial state.
12.19, i completely agree. i am on so much aid, AND i'm an international. i'm confident that cappy's number 1 priority is aid. sorry lathrop.
if tuition goes up, won't aid go up with it.
And I'm SICK of people saying stuff like "I'm on good financial aid, so everyone else must be too..."
SUCH bullshit. My family can afford half of what this school thinks they can.
7.58, I'm sorry you got a bad deal, but honestly, overall Vassar does an amazing job with their aid.
Agreed, 9:52. And we should all probably just wait 2 seconds and see what the deal actually is before we go making unfounded accusations and insulting the school for no reason.
"just saying, when push comes to shove, i'd rather spend our money on things like financial aid and getting the best professors than luxuries like marble bathrooms and refinished floors."
Renovations are a necessary part of Vassar's existence. It's called fixing it now, so it won't fall into a pile of rubble later. Anyway, Davison was failing building codes.
11:16 -
When money is tight, it means prioritizing is a necessity. To say we should focus on aid is not saying we should ignore renovations, but that they need to take a backseat to more important things. and yes, we should fix buildings before they fall apart, but it's more important to have the best possible class of students to fill them.
what's with the obsessive focus on aid? i believe that education should be a right and not a privilege - specifically, a college education should be a right. but should a harvard/yale/vassar education necessarily be a right in all cases?
building renovations are not as unimportant as people seem to think.
Yeah 2:55. Let's turn Vassar into a finishing school for the rich...
2:55: If you have what it takes to get into schools like that, yes, it should be. Money should not be the defining factor.
i don't mean to come off as classist, but if your family isn't in the financial standing to send you to vassar, maybe you shouldn't be looking at one of the most expensive schools in the country.
4.53, well you might not want to sound "classist", but you actually do. so congratulations on that. why we look at vassar despite our family's financial situation is not because we're getting an opportunity to get a relative free ride compared to you, but because institutions like vassar make me believe that no matter how much money i have, they will evaluate me only based on whether i'm good enough. in fact, this is the last bastion of meritocracy. so even though you seem to hint that if i can't afford it i shouldn't be here, guess what? i am here, and i deserve to be here as much as you do. don't like it? well, sucks for you doesn't it?
Hugs for everyone
4:53, that is the definition of classist. Vassar is for EVERYONE.
4:53-
That's what need-blind admission means. Apparently, they were intelligence-blind when they accepted you.
2:55 AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA i cannot believe you said vassar in the same sentence as harvard/yale. let's get real, they know how to run a business/school. vass clearly does NOT.
12:58-
You are right. Vassar's goal is to attract the best possible group of students it can. But perhaps you have forgotten that having nice dorms and buildings is an essential part of attracting those students. It's all well and good for you because you've already accepted Vassar and what it has to offer. But these things matter for prospective students as much as finaid does.
10:28-
Yale has a $15 billion endowment
Harvard has a $25 billion endowment
Vassar has an $890 billion endowment
We have a huge amount of money, but still only a fraction of the other two schools you named. Just something to consider.
i meant million for the vassar endowment. i'm sure you got that.
-11:33
10:11 - HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHA
4:53- Any time someone says "I don't mean to sound classist" or "I'm not racist or anything", it is a poorly masked attempt at obscuring his/her classism/racism.
I hope you leave your window open and I hope it rains real hard on your Macbook Pro.
Maybe we should give 4:53 a break. Not everything people post here is their cast-iron opinion. Maybe we should take an opportunity to educate someone about why their opinions are offensive to many of us instead of jumping down their throats.
