Spotted

One of our readers spotted dozens of employees by Main Circle earlier this morning picketing for health benefits.

they were also on the 2nd floor in main (by cappy's office).

but they were applauding so it kinda seemed like they were congratulating someone for something...

Overheard outside main between two of the Vassar painters:
"We've got a protest going on upstairs, go park the cart and I'll meet you up there."

It seemed weirdly out of place when heard out of context

I dont want to be mean, but is anyone else annoyed at all these protests

your not mean 3:16, just self-centered

3:16, you poor thing, being all inconvenienced by people with the nerve to think they should speak up for themselves.

it must be so upsetting to you to think that people might want decent health care benefits.

Cappy is a closet Republican.

How do you figure?

fyi, they're doing it again tomorrow in front of main around noon, go support it!!

Cappy is not a "closet Republican." I know you might have been saying that in jest, but that assertion is totally baseless.

First of all, you should realize that the College President does not negotiate with unions; that's simply not her job.

Second, you should realize that the people who do negotiate with employees need to look out for Vassar's best interest. We are in very difficult financial times, and if we want to continue attracting the best teachers, renew our physical resources and continue to expand our financial aid policies, it is hardly unreasonable for the College to try to attain the most favorable contracts possible.

That does not make Cappy or anyone else conservative or Republicans; it simply makes them responsible stewards for the well-being of students, whose interests should always come first.

Economic interests trump the students' interests at this (or any other) profiteering institution.

If Cappy were a closet (modern) Republican then she wouldn't be fiscally conservative :P
Anyways, I think that we should educate ourselves by attending their rally tomorrow. Let's step up.

I asked around to some administration and found out that this union has health coverage. In fact, unlike other employees on campus, this union pays nothing for health benefits. No premium cost share and no co-pays.
Anonymous 8:36 says to attend the union rally to get educated. Perhaps we should get the college's side as well. As I understand it, this union tends to, shall I say, exaggerate things, so please take your grain of salt before attending any rally/information session with them.

Sure, the college has many financial needs and during an economic crisis, we need to be a bit more conservative. But think of them as people, not as a giant massing union. They want to be able to live in the fairest way possible. They've got kids to feed, bills to pay, and everything else in the same way our parents do. Sure, they're not as well-off as some of our student's families, but they are doing a damn good job here and we should continue to support their rights as an employee.
