The Moderate Independent and Conservative Alliance (MICA) officially endorsed the McCain-Palin ticket at a meeting last night. Below is their press release."On Monday September 22nd members of Vassar's Moderate Independent and Conservative Alliance (MICA) voted to endorse the McCain-Palin ticket for the presidency of the United States. Senator John McCain's record of bipartisanship and loyalty to conservative principles were cited along with recognition of his courage in opposing the Bush administration on key issues. These included his opposition to proposed tax cuts (now law) without the accompaniment of spending restraint, the Rumsfeld strategy in Iraq, the use of torture, as well as his opposition to the administration's position on climate change, seen in his introduction with Senator Joseph Liberman (D-CT) of the Climate Stewardships Acts to implement a cap and trade system to reduce global green house gas emissions. Governor Palin was also recognized for her willingness to go to toe to toe with the leadership of the notoriously corrupt Alaskan Republican machine and ability to bring executive experience to the ticket.
While the endorsement was not unanimous the decision to create a Vassar for McCain-Palin subcommittee passed unanimously, as did the election of Kelly Shortridge '12 as chairwoman. The committee, which at its inception consisted of seven strongly committed students expects to expand as its visibility increases with the commencement of electoral activities."
MICA is a VSA org and meets each Monday at 9pm in the Joss Parlor. The org also publishes a periodical, The Regressive.

hello 11:59. its a a joke... a play on the opinions that many of vassar's left adopt: the notorious stance that 'either you're with us, or against us'. i.e. if you are not a 'progressive' then you are a 'regressive'. ironically similar thinking to a certain president's stance on the war on terror, i might add.
anyway, congrats to MICA for making such a bold statement.
Record of bipartisanship? Opposing the Bush Administration on key issues? Opposition to unwise and unfair tax cuts? Opposition to the Rumsfeld strategy in Iraq, including the use of torture? Opposition to the current Administration's position on climate change? Who the hell does that sound more like, Obama or McCain?
Can they name a single conservative principle to which McCain has remained faithful, besides favoring deregulation (not a popular stance right now) and making health care more private (by switching families' $12,000 employee health care plans with a measly $5,000 credit in the hands of their insurance companies)?
Basically, their only leg to stand on is that Sarah Palin has more executive experience than the other candidates, which is true, and that she's stood up to the corrupt Alaskan "political machine," which seems true until you consider Troopergate and the fact that she has racked up many thousands in unpaid income taxes since moving into the governor's mansion.
Come on, Vassar Repubs. You can't even come up with one really good reason that McCain should be elected next month.

Ugh...I'm as liberal as any else here, but come on. "I would like to meet these people"...you do realize that at least 40% of the country is going to vote for McCain, it's not that hard to find someone who doesn't hold our liberal beliefs.
I think the Dems and MICA should sponsor a debate. Vassar students for Obama against Vassar students for McCain. Now that, I would watch.

1:15 i couldn't agree more. many vassar students don't seem to realize that not EVERYONE on earth (or even at vassar) are as accepting of liberal policies as they are.
McCain opposed Bush's tax cuts before he supported them. He opposed Rumsfeld's strategy in Iraq before SUPPORTING it. He opposed torture before voting to ALLOW waterboarding. He did not care about climate change (the conservative-created pseudonym for global warming) until it was politically opportune. Vassar Repubs need to jump off the Doubletalk Express and realize that there is no difference between the policies of McCain and Bush.
I don't know if this election is really so much about stances on specific issues as it is about broad, sweeping requirements. How about: I'd like a president, a vice preisdent, a party, who isn't constantly trying to get away with some seriously criminal shit and taking huge messy dumps all over the Constitution? Or: I'd like a president who knows how to check his own fucking email, and realizes that Pakistan and Iraq do NOT share a border; I'd like a vice-president who knows her running mate's voting record and policies, and doesn't try to distract the public from her lack of knowledge with empty, meaningless buzzwords.
Seriously, whether you're a liberal or a conservative - FUCK the Republican party. They need to lose this one, take a few years off, and reformulate their values/priorities. Conservative values are fine, and it is easy for me to see why people would hold them...I even subscribe to a few myself. Yet it is hard for me to believe that people are able support what the Republican Party has come to represent. WTF? It's like actors who love playing the bad guy in films, except it's real life.

12:15... bold statement? it's a group of conservatives. so there's nothing bold about them endorsing the conservative candidate. there's nothing wrong with it either, they can endorse whoever they want. but of course that's what they're going to do
also, this maybe splitting hairs since he more often than not votes with the Dems, but Joe Lieberman is technically an Independent Democrat, which IS distinct from the Democratic party. it's not really very bipartisan of McCain to work with Lieberman on stuff. especially considering McCain needs Lieberman to repeatedly explain the differentce between Sunni and Shi'a muslims. anyway, once upon a time I rather liked John McCain, but then he "flip-flopped" on basically every issue, AND made one of the worst choices for a running mate in history. I think it is pretty clear that McCain has surrounded himself with some pretty fucking awful people in terms of our government, because well...it's the same people who ran Bush's campaign. I agree with 3:13, the Republican Party needs to stop with its absurd anti-government policies and bizarre warmongering and figure out what the fuck it should be doing for the country to actually help things.
