Dean Roellke sent out an all-campus email earlier this evening signed by him, VSA President
Jimmy Kelly '09, and
Cappy to address "
disturbing incidents of vandalism" from this past weekend. The significant damage was done to
Main and
Cushing houses.
The damage mainly consisted of overturned or broken furniture and smashed windows. A trash can was also thrown off of the TA bridge.
Cushing has yet to hear how much the damage will cost. (We haven't heard back from a Main rep.)

Cushing President
Mat Leonard '11 tells Mads: "I would just like students to remember that these are our homes and that by disrespecting them they are disrespecting everyone who lives in them, as well as themselves."

Plus people threw a trash can and a chair into the river at the bridge to the TAs. I was suprised they didn't show a picture of that too.
I feel horrible for whatever Vassar worker had to wade in there and get it. People are disgustingly inconsiderate when theyre drunk.
And people put either chocolate pudding or shit all over the toilet seats.
Someone's bike got tossed into the river from the TA bridge, too.
Seriously, Vassar - I expect better from you.
If anyone knows who committed these acts of vandalism, please fess up!! I don't wanna pay fees for something a drunken moron did.
Spoiled, drunk-ass morons. That is some f***ed up shit right there.
they ought to be shamed in public!!!
There's been a rash of crimes at Joss. All of someone's pants were stolen, as were a girl's underwear and bras. How creepy can you get? Another girl's room was broken into while she was in the bathroom - her laptop, wallet and some other stuff was taken. The next day the wallet was returned without any money.
There were 3 trash cans in the TA river.. not just one.
there were kids from other schools here this weekend too for mstrkrft....
I really hope that the Vassar administration does more to bring back community service as punishment (in addition to fines) for vandalism, alcohol policy violations, throwing unregistered parties, etc.
If there's anything we can all learn from, it's having to pick up garbage at the THs or clean out storage rooms around campus or count keys in the ROC.
ok but the point is that we don't know who did this stuff...i think we all need a punishment for not respecting the school. surely we've all seen people doing stuff they're not supposed to (hello, underage drinking) yet it's never a big deal. that's just as disrespectful to this campus as throwing a chair into the river. certainly the consequences aren't the same, but i think we, as a campus, need to rethink our lifestyle and how it can lead to damages like what happened this weekend
I blame MSTRKRFT
I blame video games
I blame premarital sex
as someone doing it right now, yes they definitely still have community service on the table but i'm not sure if it applies to vandals which it totally SHOULD [i'm in it for downloading].
but seriously, more people need to get over the 'snitch' nonsense and call out the idiots doing this shit, we shouldn't all suffer because a few people are fucking morons. even listing names here anonymously is better than people paying for damage they neither did nor wanted
SNITCHES GET STITCHES.
i don't know when all this stuff happened, but you'd think people had to be pretty fucking out of their minds to do all that shit...who knows if they even remember doing it...
Underage drinking (without destruction) it not as disrespectful as throwing shit in a river, because throwing stuff in the river includes an expectation that someone else will go and fish it out/clean up your mess.
i feel like this campus only thinks things are wrong when property gets destroyed/vandalized or a mess is made. i know that's a legitimate cause for concern, but it's not the only one
To be honest, those people are paid to clean up messes. If they don't like it, they should quit.
1:29 clean up your own mess.
1:29, "those people" are paid to clean feces that was deliberately wiped all over toilets??? Really?
There needs to be more accountability. I don't think it's out of line to suggest that maybe all of these acts of destruction happen because there are far too many rich motherfuckers at Vassar who have no respect for property - their own or anyone else's. I have plenty of friends at home who get plenty drunk every weekend, and they never insist on fucking shit up to this extent. Maybe it's because they know what it means to earn money, to have to pay for shit.
amen, 1:57.
1:29 to be honest, you need to learn RESPECT. i cannot believe people like you, with such disgusting opinions, have the balls to publicly declare them, even if its anonymous. of course, i doubt you would say the same disrespectful, ignorant comments if this were not anonymous. those "people" are human beings, who work harder than you will most likley EVER have to, for much less pay than they deserve. they work their asses off and deserve more respect than being told if they don't like it they can quit. they CANT quit, they need this job as a means to live. honestly, you disgust me.
wait, someone smeared their poop all over some toilet seats?? FOR REAL? where did this happen?
You should all read "Harvard Works Because We Do." I had to read it for my sociology class and it would make you shut the fuck up about people being paid to clean up your disgusting mess.
9:17-
I think 1:29 is an asshole too, but I'd also bet good money that you've never spoken to a custodial worker here about how they feel about their job. You talk about them in equally dismissive and dehumanizing terms as 1:29.
Cushing has some wonderfully good-natured and interesting custodial workers that I genuinely enjoy talking to. At least one of them thinks of themselves as a "caretaker" of Cushing. I'm so ashamed that someone had the (probably drug-induced) balls to so destructively mess with the place that these people work so hard to take care of.
10:27, i'd like to know how i refer to them in a 'dehumanizing' manner. i am on very good terms with the custodial staff in my dorm and in the dining halls, i do not see them as workers, but as fellow members of the campus. i genuinely enjoying having conversations with them on a daily basis. i know for a fact they do not get paid as much as many feel should, it's an issue they've told me about many times. so how exactly do i dismiss them in my statement?
"i do not see them as workers, but as fellow members of the campus."
ugh you're like one of those people who doesn't see race.
honestly if there are people out there like 1:29, this whole campus needs a huge slap in the face. intolerance anywhere at vassar is intolerance everywhere.
okay lets be fair.... even at state universities where a lot of kids are poor stuff gets fucked up whe n the kids drink or even when they dont. vandalism is not soemhow caused by it being vassar.
I'm tired of everyone blaming 'rich' & 'spoiled' kids for all of Vassar's problems.
Because yea, ONLY rich kids get ridiculously drunk and do stupid things.
I'm just tired of pointless arguing here!
What is there to "argue" even?
1. The cleaning staff are NOT paid to take care of your drunken/drug-induced messes, they are paid for the general cleanliness of your dorm of campus. They are not your "oh-the-poor-drunken-kid-puked-all-over-the-floor-I-spent-so-long-mopping-or-oh-that-kid-was-tripping-and-so-smeared-shit-all-over-the-toilet-seat-let-me-clean-it-!"
people. They are not.
2. It is pointless to bring in oter schools or offer any mitigating circumstances in defense of this. This was fucked up. Where's the argument. We should be angered by this as one united student body!
that's not true, but the rich kids feel so entitled, and they don't seem to care about anyone but themselves.
12:07- what do you mean but "your like one of those people who doesn't see race?" I'm honestly confused by that statement. I would like to think that people can see past other people's race, and just accept them for being a person.
ok 9:59, you missed the point. those responses were not saying its ok to act like a fool. But they were saying it is not limited to rich or spoiled kids. Vandalism is not caused becuase its vassar.
and personally i am also appalled by the shit people did.
i'm rich, and i don't feel entitled. why can't i be just as angry about this as the poorest kid at vassar?
Don't trash my home!
those assholes woke me up at 5am breaking my swinging door windows. fuck that.
btw, why is there ALWAYS damage in Main, no matter where the party is.
i think the school should make some REALLY strict rules and kick some motherfuckers out. thats probably impossible in most cases. But i want everyone here to call the police when there is a noise disturbance or damage to the buildings. if the police come out here the school will pay attentionn and make the security do their job
