'80s Night Is No More!

Everyone's Wednesday nights have just gotten a little less ironic. We've received official word that there will be no more '80s nights in the Mug.

To take '80s night's place for the time being is Heatwave. The Facebook group (an updated version of the '80s night group) describes Heatwave as "funk disco new wave groove." It's unclear whether or not this will be some sort of combination of '70s and '80s music.

"'80s night is dead. Heatwave is the here and now," says one of the former '80s night DJs.

Check out the new Heatwave, tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 11pm in the Mug. Still featuring DJ Timespace and DJ Levar.

What We're Watching

The Vassar connection: Actress Hope Davis is a Vassar alumna and appeared in Synecdoche, New York oppose Catherine Keener, who appears in Where The Wild Things Are. Or: Spike Jonze is dating Michelle Williams who appeared with Anne Hathaway in Brokeback Mountain.

Ok, not the most direct connection, but this just looked too good not to post. We can't wait for this to come out.

Quote Of The Day

They are "living in some alternate universe that I frankly don't really understand."

- Cappy at tonight's VSA Council meeting when asked about the alumnae/i efforts against the English department faculty reductions. She continued to say, "The English Department went immediately to the Facebook group about silencing writers. And that's too bad, because it hurts Vassar in the wider world. It's unfortunate, because if a perspective student sees that Web page, they may decide to go to Wesleyan or someplace else."

See the Misc's liveblogging of the meeting for the full quotation.

In Case You Missed It

The Misc just posted this review of Friday night's Marina and the Diamonds show.

Check back for our clip from the show!

2013 On Its Way

It feels like just yesterday that we were first posting about 2012. Well, it's that time of year again - acceptance letters have gone out and the Class of 2013 is taking shape.

Despite some controversy back in December, the new 2013 Facebook group is up and running and growing by the minute.

Congratulations, 2013!

Faculty Cuts, Tuition Increase...FML.

In her latest all-campus email regarding the economy, Cappy announced the latest plan to keep Vassar afloat amidst the recession. It basically comes down to faculty cuts.

From the email:

"Given the fact that compensation represents two-thirds of the overall expense budget, the main focus of our planning to reach a sustainable level of draw on our diminished endowment must be a reduction in the size of our workforce. The trustees have placed their confidence in the faculty and administrative leadership to develop responsible plans over the next months to reduce overall employment at the college by 10-15%, with reductions in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 budgets."

But the faculty aren't the only ones who are screwed. Cappy also (subtly) stated that tuition will increase by 4.5% to $51,470.

Misc Editor-in-Chief Publishes Book

Exciting news for the Misc... Editor-in-Chief Brian Farkas '10 has just published a book on the history of our school's newspaper.

The book - which comes in at 304 pages - traces the history of the Misc back to 1866 when it served as a literary magazine. Brian connects the articles and its writers to different events in history. "The Miscellany has seen generations of Vassar College students who have witnessed the horrors of international war, felt the injustices of racial strife, and observed stirring protests unfold on their own campus," states a description of the book. "This narrative history of the Miscellany tells the story of the young men and women writing about their collegiate environment against the grand backdrop of American history."

The book also contains interviews with former editors, personal accounts from Brian, and a foreword written by Cappy.
The book is available on

Update: We just found out that all profits from the book are going to digitally archiving the Misc, as part of an effort by the Alumnae/i Association and the library.

New Blog: The Vassar Comikaze

The latest Vassar blog to hit the internets is The Vassar Comikaze. The blog is run by "a student at Vassar who lacked an outlet for writing comedy," according to the site's mission statement. It features original work and also asks for reader submissions.

Tonight In The Mug

Post-Vassar Life...Unemployed And In Brooklyn

Apparently recent Vassar grad Meg Prossnitz '08 has come to represent Generation Y in the era of economic uncertainty. Or so an article in yesterday's New York Post says.

"I thought at least by now I'd be living on the Lower East Side or Williamsburg and, I don't know, have my photo all over," Prossnitz told the Post. Instead she is living in Bed-Stuy with "no paying job in sight."

"The stark new reality, of course, is that life is not The Hills. Many Gen Yers now have to settle for a job at odds with their quest for meaning, affirmation, and fun," says the article.

Nice to know what awaits us after graduation!

Vassar Grads Team Up For New Film

Gabriel Tigerman '02 and Spencer Berger '01 have just released the new indie film Skills Like This, which premiered last week at the Angelika Film Center in New York City. The film will be released nation-wide in the coming weeks.

"Skills Like This has been to over a dozen festivals over the past year, winning the 'Audience Award' at SXSW and 'Best of the Fest' at Edinburgh," one of the filmmakers tells Mads.

Another Vassar Connection

The latest Vassar connection to the Obama administration is Dr. Margaret Hamburg who was named Food and Drug Association commissioner a few days ago...

Hamburg's mother was the first African American woman to attend Vassar.

Not the most direct connection, but still noteworthy. We'll take what we can get after what happened to Nancy Killefer '75.

*Breaking* Grad Student Charged With Sexual Assault

Our inbox has been flooding with news of an arrest that broke on The Poughkeepsie Journal website earlier today. A 26 year old Vassar graduate student who works on campus was arrested for sexual abusing a female student on February 28th. He is on $5,000 bail and has a court appearance on Monday. The Journal has released the man's name, although we will choose not to here.

According to The Poughkeepsie Journal:

A Vassar College graduate student was arrested today and accused of sexually abusing a female student in her dormitory, Town of Poughkeepsie police reported.

[Name omitted here] 26, who also resides on the Vassar campus, was charged with aggravated sexual abuse in the fourth degree, a felony. He was jailed on $5,000 bail pending an appearance in town court Monday, police said. [Name omitted] is accused of committing the crime in the female student’s room on the night of Feb. 28.

Update: Dean Roellke was quick to address the issue in an all campus email sent earlier this evening. "A member of the campus community has been charged and is in police custody. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police continue to investigate."

Update 2: According to the Mid-Hudson News, the assault happened in Lathrop.

Update 3: According to KISS FM, the student was taken to the Dutchess County Jail. The student is facing 14 months to 4 years in jail for sexual abuse in the fourth degree.
